Understand overnight financing
Key Points About Swap Rates
When a trading position remains open overnight, a financing adjustment known as a swap rate or rollover charge may apply.
- Swaps apply to eligible positions open beyond the applicable daily rollover time.
- A swap can be charged or credited depending on the instrument, direction and rate.
- Long and short positions can have different swap rates.
- Forex swaps can reflect interest-rate differences between two currencies.
- Some instruments may have negative rates for both long and short positions.
- Rates can change with market and financing conditions.
- A multi-day adjustment may apply to account for weekend settlement.
- Each instrument can have its own swap and rollover conditions.
Exact rollover times and multi-day swap schedules should be confirmed against CFD First’s current instrument specifications.
What are Forex swap rates?
Financing a Currency Position Overnight
A Forex swap is an overnight financing adjustment associated with holding a currency position beyond the applicable daily rollover time.
Forex trading involves two currencies. For example, an EUR/USD position involves both the euro and US dollar. Differences between interest rates and financing conditions associated with those currencies can contribute to the applicable overnight swap.
Depending on the position direction and applicable swap rate, an amount may be credited to or deducted from the trading account.
Why Long and Short Rates Can Differ
Every pair contains a base and quote currency. Changing position direction changes the relationship between those currencies, so financing for a long position may differ from financing for a short position.
Broker financing adjustments and prevailing market conditions can also contribute to the final rate.
How does a Forex swap work?
Factors Behind the Overnight Adjustment
When a Forex position remains open beyond rollover time, it is carried into the next trading day. An adjustment may then be applied according to:
Currency Interest Rates
Differences in interest-rate conditions between the two currencies.
Position Direction
Whether the position is long or short.
Position Size
The trading volume associated with the open position.
Instrument
Each currency pair can have different financing conditions.
Market Conditions
Rates and financing markets can change applicable swaps over time.
The resulting adjustment may be either a charge or a credit, depending on applicable conditions.
How are swap rates calculated?
Instrument, Size and Rollover Conditions
The exact swap depends on the instrument and CFD First’s applicable trading conditions. Forex calculations can consider the rate relationship between currencies, position direction, trade size and financing adjustments.
Example
Assume a client holds a 1 lot EUR/USD position overnight. A negative applicable swap would be deducted from the account; a positive swap may instead be credited.
The actual result depends on the current swap rate, direction, size and applicable conditions. This example is for educational purposes only.
Understanding multi-day swaps
Why More Than One Day May Apply
Financial markets do not settle in the same way every calendar day. For certain instruments, a multi-day or triple swap may be applied on a specified trading day to account for weekends or other non-settlement days.
A three-day adjustment means applicable financing is accounted for across multiple calendar days rather than only one. The day can differ between instruments.
The exact multi-day swap schedule should be published only after confirming current rollover rules for each instrument.
Why swap rates matter
Positions Held Across Trading Days
Swap rates become particularly relevant when a position is maintained for more than one trading day. Multiple rollover periods can accumulate multiple adjustments.
Longer-Term Positions
Positions intended to remain open across multiple trading days.
Swing Trading Positions
Trades that may remain open across several market sessions.
Positions Around Weekends
Positions remaining open when multi-day financing may apply.
Hedged Positions
Multiple positions can each be subject to their own financing conditions.
Swap rates can change
Review Current Information
Swap rates should not be treated as permanently fixed. Central-bank rates, financing conditions, markets, liquidity and instrument-specific factors can change applicable overnight rates.
The swap associated with an instrument today may not remain the same. Review current swap information before maintaining positions overnight.
